How it works

From signup to first savings in 4 steps.

No installs, no fleet downtime, no contracts to negotiate. Drivers don't change anything about their truck — just how they drive it.

1 Day 1 · 15 minutes

Connect your telematics

One API key from whatever telematics you already use — Samsara, Motive, Geotab, or any other provider with an API. We pull live mileage, fuel use, idle time, and driver assignments. No hardware to install. Your dispatch keeps working exactly the same way. Don't see your provider? Tell us — we add new ones regularly.

2 Week 1 · We do it

We set each truck's baseline MPG

From your last 3 months of data, we calculate what each truck normally gets — its honest baseline. Every gallon saved above that line is real, measurable savings, not a vendor estimate.

3 Week 2 · Drivers onboard

Drivers see their MPG and bonus on a free app

Every driver opens a phone app — no install needed, just a link — that shows their live MPG today, their bonus dollars earned this month, idle time, and how they rank. The number on their phone is what changes their behavior.

4 Month 1 onward

Savings show up. You pay a share.

Each month we calculate fleet savings vs. baseline. Drivers earn their bonus through your existing payroll. You keep the largest share. MPG Smart's fee is a small slice of what we just saved you — $0 if there were no savings.

For fleet owners

Lower fuel cost. Better drivers. No upfront risk.

A trucking-operations tool, not a generic fuel-tracking dashboard.

For the fleet owner

What the office gets

  • Reduce fuel cost by getting drivers to actually care about MPG.
  • No hardware, no installs, no long contracts. Plug into the telematics you already pay for.
  • Pay from measured savings. Our fee is a percentage of verified fuel savings during the savings phase.
  • Driver retention support — drivers earning a real bonus tend to stay longer.
  • Live dashboard: per-truck MPG, idle, fuel cost, attention list of worst performers.
For drivers

Real money for driving better. Nothing taken away.

Most "fuel programs" punish drivers. MPG Smart lines up the incentives so drivers want to save fuel.

For the drivers

What the cab gets

  • A monthly bonus they can actually move with their right foot — paid through your normal payroll.
  • Live MPG on their phone so they know if they're trending toward a bigger bonus today.
  • Their pay only goes up — base pay never gets cut. Bonus is on top.
  • Fair team-driver split when two drivers share a truck.
  • Available in English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Georgian.

Example results from a 500-truck fleet

Six months in.

When drivers can see their MPG performance and bonus progress every day, fuel savings become easier to measure, explain, and maintain.

500

Cumulative savings, 6 months
~$97K
Avg savings / month

A 500-truck fleet driving 5M miles/month gradually improved fleet MPG from 6.5 to 7.8 over six months. Cumulative fuel savings during that ramp: ~$585K.

Example based on fleet operating data. Actual results depend on route mix, driver behavior, fuel price, equipment, idle time, and baseline MPG.

Why this works

Most fuel programs tell drivers what not to do. MPG Smart gives drivers a visible financial reason to improve MPG every day, while giving management a clear view of savings, trends, and bonus performance.

Pricing

Start with shared savings. Keep gains with a simple subscription.

MPG Smart is designed to reduce risk for fleets. You start by paying from measured savings, then move to a simple subscription once the savings process is proven.

No upfront setup fee

Start without buying hardware or paying a large implementation fee.

Pay from measured savings

During the savings phase, MPG Smart is paid from verified fuel savings, so the program is aligned with results.

Subscription after savings are proven

Once MPG improvement is stable, your fleet can continue with a predictable monthly software subscription.

Example model

If MPG Smart helps your fleet save fuel, savings can be split between the fleet, drivers, and MPG Smart. The exact structure is confirmed during setup based on fleet size, baseline MPG, telematics data, and driver bonus rules.

Why fleets stay subscribed

The platform keeps the gains in place over time.

Once trucks reach their MPG ceiling, a small flat per-truck subscription keeps the daily MPG number on drivers' phones and the monthly bonus structure running. It's the simplest way to make sure the habits your team built keep paying you back, month after month.

See what happened to one fleet that paused — and came back

After 14 months on the program, every truck on a 100-truck fleet had reached its MPG ceiling. The owner felt confident the team had built the habit and decided to pause the subscription to save a little.

Within about 90 days, fleet MPG had drifted back toward where it started. Without the daily MPG number on their phone and the monthly bonus, drivers gradually fell back into older patterns — a few extra minutes of idle here, a heavier foot on grades, less attention to drafting distance. The savings the fleet had built up began to slip.

Six months later they came back and re-onboarded. The owner summed it up:

"The subscription was the cheapest insurance I've ever cancelled by accident."

We share this not as a warning, but as a useful example. Ongoing visibility and small monthly incentives are what keep driving habits in place once they're learned — that's the whole purpose of the post-ceiling subscription tier.

FAQ

Common questions from fleet owners.

Do we need to install new hardware?
No. MPG Smart connects through API to the telematics system already in your trucks. There are no hardware installs, no truck visits, no extra dongles or boxes. If you're already running Samsara, Motive, Geotab, or another API-enabled provider, you're already set up.
Which telematics systems do you support?
Samsara, Motive, and Geotab today. If you use a different API-enabled provider, tell us — adding a new integration is a normal part of onboarding. If your current system doesn't expose an API, we'll let you know up front rather than promise something we can't deliver.
How are driver bonuses calculated?
From measured fuel savings against each truck's baseline MPG. Each month we compute gallons saved × your fuel price, then split the savings between the fleet, the drivers, and MPG Smart based on the percentages confirmed during setup. Drivers see their bonus accruing in real time on the app, paid through your existing payroll.
Do you guarantee fuel savings?
No. Savings are not guaranteed. They depend on your fleet data, routes, drivers, fuel prices, and how the program is rolled out. The pricing model is designed around that reality — during the savings phase, MPG Smart is paid from measured savings, so if there are no savings in a month, there is no fee that month.
How long does implementation take?
Connection takes about a day once you have the telematics API key. Baseline calculation needs roughly the prior 3 months of data, which we pull through the API at setup. Drivers can be onboarded within the first 1–2 weeks. Most fleets see measurable MPG movement in the first 30 days, with a 3–6 month ramp to a stable improved level.
What happens after savings improve?
Once MPG improvement is stable across the fleet, the program moves from the shared-savings phase to a predictable monthly subscription. The driver-facing app, dashboard, and bonus structure stay live so the habits don't drift. You can cancel anytime.
Is this only for large fleets?
No. The math works the same at 5 trucks as at 500. Smaller fleets often ramp faster because owners can talk directly to every driver. Larger fleets benefit from the per-truck and per-driver attention list more, since coaching can't reach everyone manually.
