How it works

From signup to first savings in 4 steps.

No installs, no fleet downtime, no contracts to negotiate. Drivers don't change anything about their truck — just how they drive it.

1 Day 1 · 15 minutes

Connect your telematics

One API key from your Samsara or Motive account. We pull live mileage, fuel use, idle time, and driver assignments. No hardware to install. Your dispatch keeps working exactly the same way.

2 Week 1 · We do it

We set each truck's baseline MPG

From your last 3 months of data, we calculate what each truck normally gets — its honest baseline. Every gallon saved above that line is real, measurable savings, not a vendor estimate.

3 Week 2 · Drivers onboard

Drivers see their MPG and bonus on a free app

Every driver opens a phone app — no install needed, just a link — that shows their live MPG today, their bonus dollars earned this month, idle time, and how they rank. The number on their phone is what changes their behavior.

4 Month 1 onward

Savings show up. You pay a share.

Each month we calculate fleet savings vs. baseline. Drivers earn their bonus through your existing payroll. You keep the largest share. MPG Smart's fee is a small slice of what we just saved you — $0 if there were no savings.

Why it works

Everyone wins, on purpose.

Most "fuel programs" punish drivers or rely on coaches nagging them. MPG Smart lines up the incentives so drivers want to save fuel.

For the fleet owner

Lower fuel cost. Better drivers. No upfront risk.

  • Cut fuel cost 5–20% by getting drivers to actually care about MPG.
  • No hardware, no installs, no contracts. Plug into the telematics you already pay for.
  • Pay nothing during the ramp. Our fee is a percentage of savings — it can't cost you money.
  • Driver retention goes up — drivers earning a real bonus tend to stay.
  • Live dashboard: per-truck MPG, idle, fuel cost, attention list of worst performers.
For the drivers

Real money for driving better. Nothing taken away.

  • A monthly bonus they can actually move with their right foot — paid through your normal payroll.
  • Live MPG on their phone so they know if they're trending toward a bigger bonus today.
  • Their pay only goes up — base pay never gets cut. Bonus is on top.
  • Fair team-driver split when two drivers share a truck.
  • Available in English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Georgian.

A 500-truck fleet driving 5M miles/month gradually improved fleet MPG from 6.5 to 7.8 over six months. Cumulative fuel savings during that ramp: ~$585K — averaging ~$97K/month while drivers built the new habits. Once the program is in place, the new MPG sticks, and savings continue every month going forward.

Pricing

You only pay when you're saving.

Two simple phases. While you're ramping, we share in the savings. Once your fleet hits its ceiling, we switch to a small flat subscription that keeps the gains locked in.

Phase 1 — While you're saving

Share of savings

$0 setupPay only when fleet MPG beats its baseline

Each month, we measure savings vs. your baseline. The savings get split three ways — and your share is the biggest one.

Fleet keeps ~50%
Drivers earn (configurable) ~40%
MPG Smart fee ~10%

Driver share is configurable per fleet. If there are no savings in a month, MPG Smart's fee is $0 — we don't make money unless you do.

Phase 2 — After ceiling

Flat per-truck subscription

Small monthly feePer active truck, after the MPG ceiling is hit

Once trucks reach their MPG ceiling, savings have already been banked. To keep drivers locked into the new habits, we switch to a flat subscription — keeps the dashboard, app, and bonus structure live.

Driver bonus continues Yes
Live MPG app Yes

Why fleets stay subscribed

The platform keeps the gains in place over time.

Once trucks reach their MPG ceiling, a small flat per-truck subscription keeps the daily MPG number on drivers' phones and the monthly bonus structure running. It's the simplest way to make sure the habits your team built keep paying you back, month after month.

See what happened to one fleet that paused — and came back

After 14 months on the program, every truck on a 100-truck fleet had reached its MPG ceiling. The owner felt confident the team had built the habit and decided to pause the subscription to save a little.

Within about 90 days, fleet MPG had drifted back toward where it started. Without the daily MPG number on their phone and the monthly bonus, drivers gradually fell back into older patterns — a few extra minutes of idle here, a heavier foot on grades, less attention to drafting distance. The savings the fleet had built up began to slip.

Six months later they came back and re-onboarded. The owner summed it up:

"The subscription was the cheapest insurance I've ever cancelled by accident."

We share this not as a warning, but as a useful example. Ongoing visibility and small monthly incentives are what keep driving habits in place once they're learned — that's the whole purpose of the post-ceiling subscription tier.

Bottom line: pay only when there are savings to share, and once there aren't, a small flat subscription keeps the wins locked in.

FAQ

Common questions from fleet owners.

Do I need to install any hardware?
No. MPG Smart connects to the telematics you already pay for — Samsara or Motive. One API key, no truck visits, no installs. If you have a different telematics provider, ask us — we add new ones regularly.
How long until I see savings?
Most fleets see measurable improvement in the first 30 days of giving drivers visibility into their MPG and bonus. Fleets typically ramp toward their MPG ceiling over 3–6 months as drivers build habits. Once at ceiling, savings continue every month going forward.
What does it actually cost me?
Nothing upfront. $0 setup. While you're saving, MPG Smart takes a small percentage of the savings (typically ~10%), drivers earn a configurable share (typically ~40%), and the fleet keeps the rest (~50%). If a month produces no savings, MPG Smart's fee that month is $0. After your fleet hits its MPG ceiling, we switch to a small flat per-truck subscription to keep the bonus structure and live app running.
What about my drivers — won't they push back?
Drivers earn a real bonus they can move with their right foot. Their base pay is never cut. Within the first month most drivers are checking the app daily because the number on it equals dollars in their next paycheck. We provide a "How it works" page in the driver app — in English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Georgian — that explains the program in their words, and copy-paste templates you can text out on day one.
What data do you need? Who owns it?
We pull mileage, fuel use, idle time, and driver assignments from your telematics. You own your data. We don't sell it, and we don't share it across fleets.
Can I cancel?
Anytime. There are no multi-year contracts. The retention story above explains what tends to happen when fleets cancel — drivers drift back toward older habits within ~90 days. The subscription tier is what keeps the habits in place.
What about team drivers — two drivers in one truck?
Built in. You set a percent split per assignment, and the monthly bonus splits accordingly. Each driver sees their own share in the app.
Does this work for very small fleets?
Yes. The math works the same at 5 trucks as at 500. Smaller fleets often ramp faster because owners can talk to every driver.
